My Love for PG Wodehouse Novels
I am an ardent reader of the books written by PG Wodehouse. You might have seen them in libraries or might have read one of them. They are the funniest books ever written and I love reading them.
To pick up a PG Wodehouse novel is to find oneself in the presence of a genius - no writer has ever given me so much pure enjoyment
Back in college, I picked up my first PG Wodehouse novel - Right Ho, Jeeves and I remember keeping a dictionary next to me and reading through the book and learning the meanings behind the words. The author uses British vocabulary and I took a lot of time to read the first couple of PG Wodehouse books.
I like how the plots of every PG Wodehouse book (especially the series containing Jeeves & Wooster) is similar. Even though it is predictable, the humour and the varying story lines make every book enjoyable. Here’s how a typical plot goes:
Plot Line
In every book, the story describes a very naive and meddling Wooster. Wooster tries to be a hero and attempts to get involved in helping a lot of other people. He is quite stupid but he doesn’t realise it. He often complicates these scenarios and gets into a lot of mess.
Examples
- Helping an unattractive friend set up with a female girl crush
- Helping someone steal something for whatever reason.
Wooster meddles in these situations and gets into a lot of trouble. The situation looks very simple at first, and as the story progresses it gets really messy and complex. Jeeves, the butler employed by Wooster is quite adept at managing situations and he helps untangle the mess Wooster creates and very often, succeeds.
I really like the plot line. The writer, PG Wodehouse, starts writing a simple plot, then creates a lot of subplots from the main plot. The reader, like me, wonders how all these subplots connect. And somehow, very smoothly, the writer collects each of the individual subplot, one by one and then bunches them into a neat little knot by the end of the book.
I might have already read around 25 Wodehouse books, but the anticipation and the joy of every book is the same. While reading,I am often seen laughing out load or in serious contemplation of how the story would end.
Witty and effortlessly fluid, His books are laugh-out-loud funny
